Electric aviation can reuse important technology and experience from road-vehicle charging. It should not assume that the integration problems have already been solved. Aviation raises the consequences and expands the operating environment.
Specifications do not remove ecosystem risk
Road-vehicle charging has shown that standards are necessary but do not guarantee practical interoperability. Systems considered compliant can still fail because of timing, certificates, state handling, supplier interpretation, or the interaction between communication and physical behaviour.
Electric aviation inherits those challenges while adding safety-critical operations, turnaround constraints, mobile or distributed infrastructure, high-power requirements, and cross-border operation.
Operational impact changes the validation threshold
A charging incompatibility for a passenger vehicle is disruptive. In aviation it can affect dispatch, turnaround, asset utilisation, airport operations, and safety processes. Weak interoperability does not simply reduce convenience; it can stop the operation.
Security becomes multi-domain trust
Charging security already involves TLS behaviour, certificates, identities, and trust chains. Aviation can add multiple operators, infrastructure owners, authorities, service providers, and jurisdictions. Validation must cover not only cryptographic correctness but also the operational behaviour of trust updates, expiry, fallback, and failure handling.
Start with scenario-based validation
The lesson from EV charging is to validate complete interactions early. Scenarios should combine communication, timing, physical states, safety logic, authentication, backend dependencies, interruptions, and recovery. Execution should be repeatable and evidence should be created automatically.
Electric aviation has an opportunity to build this discipline before fragmented implementations and costly late integration become established. Reusing EV knowledge is valuable—but only when the validation approach evolves with the new system.
